Orange Teenage Room Ideas

Neutral tones or muted shades work great in some rooms. But if the space is for a teenager, he may request an untraditional bold shade: hot pink, electric blue -- or maybe even orange. Thankfully, you have plenty of creative options for how to create a room for a teenager.
  1. Paint Plan

    • Paint orange on an accent wall.

First, begin with the walls. The obvious option is to paint bright orange on every wall, but that can make it overpowering. Instead, try a very pale shade of the color, or use the bright orange on only one accent wall. Another way to tone it down is instead of all orange walls, paint two walls orange and two walls a complementary color: a pale blue, soft yellow or cream. Or, instead of using just a plain orange, shop the paint aisle of a home improvement store to see the wide range of hues available: peach, amber, papaya, tangerine, ginger and more.

    Cool Scene

    • Try a mural of a tiger to incorporate orange.

One more creative use of orange in the room is a mural -- and it's another good way to keep the color from being overwhelming. Let the teenager choose any scene with a lot of orange in it to have painted on an accent wall: a backyard full of blooming flowers; a pumpkin patch; tiger with cubs in a jungle; an orchard of orange trees; an orange cat; a collection of orange-plumed birds such as orioles, warblers, swallows and thrushes; or a magnificent underwater view of sea coral, a variety of fish, sea lilies and sponges.

    Proper Touches

    • If you can't paint the walls, try orange furniture.

Use furnishings and room accents to incorporate orange. This option is a good idea if you'd rather not, or are not allowed to, paint the walls. Orange curtains, chair cushions, rugs on the floor and accent pillows on the couch will make a bold statement. Place an orange throw on an armchair and an orange beanbag in a corner. If the space you're decorating for the teenager is a bedroom, use an orange bedspread and paint the dresser, nightstands and a bookshelf orange.

    Fine Flora

    • Orange potted flowers will add a natural element to the room.

Integrate orange with plants. In any space, plants add an element of nature and serenity, so let your teenager reap these benefits in the room. For a girl, take her to a plant nursery and let her select from potted begonias, impatiens, zinnias, poppies, marigolds, daffodils or lilies. For a boy, let him choose a bonsai, a potted tree, a small shrub, a ficus, a philodendron or a snake plant and then repot it in a flower pot painted orange. Make sure to inquire about how to care for the plants. Let a teen who doesn't have a green thumb create a fake plant with artificial greenery and orange flowers, insert it into florist's foam and place it in a basket spray-painted orange.
