Cheerful Adult Bedroom Colors

A room's color goes a long way in establishing its mood and ambiance. For those wishing to come home to an uplifting, welcoming and cheerful-feeling--yet adult--bedroom, finding the right colors can be a challenge. With the right base coat and any of a number of themes to go with it, any bedroom can show that you still know how to have fun as an adult.
  1. Red

    • Red done right gives off a cheery, playful feel.

The correct shade of red can fill a room with optimistic energy. A bright fire engine or apple red can inspire creativity and cheerful energy, especially when paired with an equally energizing color such as yellow or white. Bright red walls--especially those done in striped patterns with different shades of red--can be dramatic and uplifting. Alternatively, use red as an accent to another color; red furniture, chairs, curtains, paintings or even wooden blinds can bring energy to the room.

Red can be rustic and vintage or classic, especially when paired with pieces like wrought iron plant holders, candleholders and stools. Red often inspires thoughts of love and romance, and adding a red rose theme can help bring a smile after the longest of days.

    Yellow

    • Yellow is a fun and versatile color.

There's not much that's more cheerful than yellow, but it can be an intimidating color for a bedroom because of its association with kitchens and bathrooms. With the right shades and combinations, it can make for a cheery and welcoming color. Yellow is also one of the most flexible colors, so pairing it with accent pieces or walls of almost any other color, from red to blue, will match.

Golden yellows can evoke feelings of the countryside, especially when painted and textured with other, softer shades of yellow and off-white. Stencils can be effective on this bright color, especially when added in leaf or other natural patterns. Yellow is also an excellent background color for decorative borders, elaborately scroll-worked mirrors or cushioned wicker furniture.

    Blue

    • Blue can bring the freedom of the outdoors into the home.

Bright shades of blue can be crisp and clean, opening up a room and making it welcoming. When decorating with blue, the room's mood can depend greatly on what it's paired with. To ensure a cheerful feel to the room, pair it with an unconventional color such as green. It may take some trial and error to select the correct shades, but properly matching blues and greens can create the free-spirited feeling of the seaside. Blue and yellow can also be paired for a nautical feel.

Selecting bright but not overpowering shades of blue is also essential. Sea-foam shades, or those reminiscent of a robin's egg, can accent shades of off-white. Dark blues used in combination with other, lighter shades add contrast and depth.

    Pink

    • Pink accessories can brighten almost any room.

Pink might bring up images of a little girl's room, but used correctly it can also be a cheerful, bright and carefree color with which to decorate an adult's room. Stay away from soft shades, and experiment with bright pinks, either as wall colors or as accents to white, off-white, cream or even black. The combination of black and pink can bring an uplifting, daring feeling to a room. Alternatively, shades of pink that border on purple are warm, welcoming and just as daring.

A pink bedroom is made by the accessories it's paired with. Metallic ceiling tiles can create a fun yet sophisticated backdrop, or pairing a splash of pink in a bedspread or wall border with another cheery color--such as yellow--can provide a fun way to liven up a bedroom even further.
