Children's Bedroom Concepts

A child's bedroom is his own space, a place where he gets to play, dream and explore his interests. Choose a bedroom concept that reflects those interests and encourage him to help choose the decorations. Bedding, beds, floor covers, window treatments, lighting, wall space and toy storage are all areas that can be decorated or act as props for your child's imagination and sense of play.
  1. Outer Space

    • An outer space bedroom concept offers an opportunity to teach your child about the universe. Hang a large mobile of the planets from the ceiling. Paint a mural of a galaxy or a rocket on one wall. Put up posters of star charts on the other walls. Paste glow-in-the-dark stars on the ceiling. Cover the bed with a dark blue comforter and sheets with a planet or star print. Add a dark blue rug to complete the room.

    Swimming

    • Wall murals or decals that depict swimmers and diving are ideal accessories for a swimmer's room. Look for a light blue comforter with a print of swimming lanes; storage drawers below the bed can resemble changing room lockers. Replace the light switch face plate with one that has a swimmer diving towards the switch. A half-circle rug printed with bathing suits continues the swimming theme. Hang school pennants on the wall.

    Racing

    • Race car bed comforters are fairly easy to find at kids' furniture stores and these stores usually carry sheet sets to match. Cover the bedroom floor in a thick, light brown rug to resemble a dirt racing track. Paint spectators in bleachers on two of the walls. Add a scoreboard on a third wall and a judge's stand on the last wall. Hang shelves above the bedroom door to hold trophies.

    Horses

    • Cover your child's bed with a horse-themed quilt and hang a bridle over the headboard. Put up a horse vinyl wall decal. Stencil the wall over the bed with a horse design that includes your child's name. Hang a cowboy hat on a wooden peg on another wall. A table with the figure of a horse as a base can work as a nightstand. The nightstand could hold a lamp with a painted shade of running horses.
