Sometimes the specific colors you choose for your cupboards are not what make them stand out, but rather the colors you put next to them that do. If you'd like the colors you've chosen for your cupboard to have a bit of a pop, paint the insides of your cupboards a color that contrasts with the color on the outside of the cupboard. For example, honey yellow cupboards will contrast nicely with cobalt blue interiors. To bring this effect to full fruition, add glass or chicken wire to the front of your cupboards so that you can see the color on the inside of the cupboard.
If you still haven't determined what colors to feature on your kitchen cupboards, choose a decorating style. Colors associated with certain decorating styles, like Tuscan, Japanese, or English country, are usually associated with the decorating styles based on the traditions that helped the style develop over time. Choosing a decorating style offers you an added bonus. Not only do you have some idea of the colors of paint you can use for your cupboards, but a decorating style also gives you some idea of what kinds of decorative accessories to choose to decorate in that style. These accessories include items like brightly colored pottery, foodstuffs as decorative elements and decorative ceramic figurines.
Sometimes the color for your cupboards isn't necessarily a color at all, but rather a neutral. Industrial decorating styles utilize silver, gray and other metallic colors. Although you can feature metal cupboards with the advances in modern paints, doing so isn't necessary. To create a metallic industrial look for your cupboard, paint them with a pounded steel paint to give the cupboards texture. You have a number of different options from there. You can retain the pounded steel look but add another metallic paint color like copper on top. Additionally, for just a spot of color, add brightly colored drawer pulls or cupboard knobs.
You can further complement the colors of your cupboards by choosing room accents that work with your color scheme. For example, if you've painted your cupboards with a shiny black lacquer paint, lay down some black and white tile on the floor and feature a black wrought iron table and chairs set. In among these items, introduce elements of your accent colors, which helps to create a unified look throughout the room, making the cupboards look like they belong in it instead of coming across visually like they're a design element that belongs someplace else.
