Contemporary Paint Colors

Black and White

• An all-white interior looks fresh, versatile and contemporary, highlighting a minimalistic space or brightly colored modern decor. All-white can also have a futuristic look, making an ideal backdrop for artwork. Though less common, black has an edgy, contemporary feel. Black interiors can be overwhelming, but may work well in rooms that feature large windows and plenty of natural light. Black paint also works well as an accent against lighter colors. White walls with black accents create a high-contrast color scheme.

Other Neutrals

• Neutral colors run the risk of looking too plain or stodgy, but choosing the right shades creates a look of contemporary elegance. Cool, soft, blue-based grays offer a more interesting update on white, giving the appearance of larger, brighter spaces. Darker grays provide a compromise if you're hesitant to use black paint. Avoid using dark gray in dimly-lit or small rooms, since it visually shrinks these spaces. Soft cocoa brown looks comfy and natural while still remaining trendy.

Bright Colors

• Contemporary paint colors often evoke a bold look, whether using bright colors as main wall colors or as accents. Citrus colors such as orange, lemon yellow or lime green stand out, providing new life to walls in dimly-lit or unexciting spaces. White and black furniture and accessories complement the brightness of the walls. Bright red also works well with black and white accents. To soften the boldness of bright colors, paint only one or two walls with your chosen shade, leaving the rest white.

Rich Colors

• For a chic home, rich gem-like colors contribute to a contemporary look. Purple is an unexpected color for interior walls. Opt for a rich purple, such as eggplant, rather than an overly vivid purple. Contemporary homes often acknowledge and complement the natural landscape. Dark teal, which features blue undertones, offers a compromise between traditional green colors and gives a more edgy, updated look. A rich sapphire blue looks especially contemporary when contrasting with other complementary colors, such as light orange or white.
