Ideas for Decorating a Blue Room for a Child

Blue rooms conjure images of open skies and can be serene and peaceful. However, too much blue can also become depressing, so the trick is to balance the shades of blue or add an accent color to bring a touch of warmth and cheerfulness into the room for your child.
  1. Accent Color

    • A room completely in blue may become depressing for a child, so consider a warm accent color for a punch of interest. Pair yellow or cream with blue for a classic look, while the addition of black can add more drama to a pre-teen's room. A deep burgundy red blends with navy blue to provide a touch of sophistication to the child's room or combine a periwinkle blue and a soft pink pearl for a romantic castle feel for a budding princess.

    Walls

    • Design the walls to correspond with your theme. For example, if the theme is Blue's Clues, then add Blue to the wall through paint, stencil or wallpaper. You can apply the design to the top portion of the wall where it is visible from the bed and apply a different treatment to the bottom portion of the wall, such as beadboard or paint. Or, use one wall as an accent wall covering it with a large mural of the ocean or sailboats.

    Fabrics

    • Fabric can add texture and bring patterns into the room. Select window treatments that provide privacy for the child but allow light in, such as sheers covered by drapes or shutters with slats. Bedding, such as the sheets and bed skirt, should reflect the blue colors, whether it is in a stripe pattern or solid. A comforter may be made from blue denim, a soft blue chenille or reflect the theme, such as a nautical, seascape or butterfly design.

    Accessories

    • Bring in accessories to tie the room together for a finished look. Examine the details and coordinate the drawer pulls, closet knobs and light switches into a blue design or a metallic to reflect off the blue color. A blue alarm clock or one on the wall can keep time while blue frames contain pictures of family and friends. Blue lampshades top navy blue base lamps and a collection of blue stuffed animals sit on a shelf.
