Military Bedroom Ideas for Kids

Color

• Color is going to be an important aspect in bringing a military feel to a bedroom. A general military theme can be created by combining shades of tan and green to resemble camouflage. Other options include selecting the official colors from a specific branch; the Army is black and gold, the Air Force is blue and silver and the Marines are scarlet and gold. The walls may be painted in these hues, or painted a more subtle neutral tone and accented with these colors. This option is ideal for small or dark rooms, and will be easier to adjust as the child ages.

Texture

• Texture is a design technique that adds visual interest to a room. Generally, it is as simple as adding an area rug and some throw pillows, though military style may go a little more in depth. A camouflage blanket with solid-colored sheets in a contrasting color is an easy way to add texture. Additional options include military green pillows accented with buttons, patches and pins that resemble those on military uniforms.

Accessories

• The accessories in a military bedroom will vary depending on the age and sex of the child. Though it is traditionally a male theme, a military-themed room for a girl is not out of the question. A net canopy in either green or pink may bring a girly touch to the room. For young children, shelves can be lined with military action figures, trucks and similar subjects, while wall decor may include military posters, shadowboxed flags, model airplanes and the like.

Furnishings

• Proper furnishings will make a child's bedroom both functional and fun. The size of the furniture, its shape and its color will vary depending on the specific bedroom's style and size. The bed is one piece where creativity can flourish. A basic wood headboard may be painted to resemble military foot lockers or even an old Jeep door. Though this will require some talent with a paintbrush, the effect will make the room more authentic. A set of actual foot lockers along one wall, or under the bed or in the closet, can provide appropriate storage space. These pieces can be picked up fairly easily at military surplus stores.
