Room Color Ideas for Teenagers

Decorating a room for a teenager can be a challenging project. Teens often have strong opinions on what their room should look like, and it may be bolder and more dramatic than what you'd choose for your own bedroom. However, when it comes to choosing a wall color, you may be more flexible since paint is inexpensive and easy to change. Several bright and bold shades may appeal to your teen, though you may try compromising on a lighter shade in the same family if her heart is set on a truly outrageous color.
  1. Hot Pink

    • Pink is a common color for a girl's bedroom, but your teenage daughter may no longer appreciate the soft pink that covered her walls when she was younger. For a mature alternative, consider hot pink or magenta for her bedroom. If the color is too bright to paint all four walls, create an accent wall behind the bed or another area of the room that you wish to highlight. You can paint the remaining walls white or a paler shade of pink for a tone-on-tone look. You can also use the hot pink shade to paint stripes on the wall for added visual interest.

    Blue

    • Blue is a common shade of color bedrooms because it has cool, calming effect. It can work for a teenager's room if you explore the many shades in the blue family. Forgo pale robin's egg or baby blue for richer, more saturated shades. Cobalt makes a striking statement on the walls of a larger bedroom, while blue-gray has more understated, soothing effect. Navy may be a good compromise if your teenager is requesting black for his walls. You can also opt for a bright turquoise for a funky, modern look.

    Yellow

    • Yellow is a fun, bold shade that may be ideal for your teen's bedroom. It is an energetic, cheerful color so it is a good match if your son or daughter has a similar disposition. You can use a subtle, light shade of yellow to help make a small bedroom feel larger, but your teen may prefer bright, lemon yellow for a more dramatic look. When looking for colors to pair with yellow, other warm tones, such as orange, red and brown, can create a cozy, comfortable feel. Your teen may also appreciate combining yellow walls with purple accents for a bold, upbeat look.

    Purple

    • Like blue, purple is cool-toned so it has the potential to be soothing and relaxing when used in a bedroom. However, your teen may appreciate a brighter purple shade that gives the room a fun, contemporary look. Light shades of purple like lilac or blue-toned shades like violet can create a more subtle look if your teen prefers. As mentioned, you can pair purple with yellow shades, but it also looks good with white, green and pink. Try using light and dark shades of purple to create a monotone look for the room that gives it a modern flair.

    Brown

    • Not all teens appreciate bold, vibrant colors. If your son or daughter is a fan of subtle, neutral shades, forgo white or cream and opt for brown shades. Brown is a warm-toned color that gives a room a cozy feeling. It can create a sophisticated, mature look for your teen's bedroom that she may appreciate as she gets older. Try colors like tan or taupe for the walls if the space is small. You can use a richer chocolate brown if the room is large or if you plan to create an accent wall. Add pops of color to the room with red or orange accents to continue the warm look. You may also pair brown with blue or green shades for a unique, contrasting look.
