How to Decorate a Small Bedroom With Orange & Blue

Pairing orange and blue in a small bedroom is a celebration of the fact that "opposites attract." Orange and blue are directly across from one another on the color wheel, meaning that they have no base color in common. They make a loud design statement that calls attention to the decor. It's important to make a plan, particularly when you're introducing such a bold color combination to a space.

Orange and blue are often spotted in specific decor styles, such as contemporary, funky and bohemian designs. Orange is considered a warm color, associated with vitality, energy and excitement. Blue is a cool tone, a color that evokes feelings of calm and tranquility. Although they have nothing in common, you'll find that orange and blue are complements to each other once you've used them in concert. For example, paint three walls of your bedroom a neutral beige and the fourth wall in bright, navel orange. Layer a royal blue comforter over the bed and accent it with orange throw pillows. Anchor the space next to the bed with an area rug with a neutral and blue pattern. Sheer orange accordion blinds will pull the look together.

Balance orange and blue with light colors. Make sure that your bedroom has plenty of beige and white tones that will not only make the orange and blue combination pop, but will help make the room feel calmer. For example, if your bedding and drapes are a combination of orange and blue, neutralize the walls with a creamy white or soft mocha paint color. If you want touches of orange and blue in accents such as lampshades, throw pillows and area rugs, balance those by covering other surfaces in a soft, neutral palette.

Match intensities for the most pleasing outcome. Each color comes in a range of shades. Blue is available in hues such as midnight blue, powder blue, royal blue, robins egg blue and purplish-blue. Orange also runs the color gamut, from rusty orange, salmon orange, true navel orange and peach. For example, if you're introducing midnight blue throw pillows, make sure the bedding is also a dark shade like rusty orange. If you enjoy a peachier shade, pair it with the equally pale bluish-violet. The continuity of shades makes a decor less visually jarring and easy to relax into.

Minimize other elements of the decor. Editing items will make the room feel larger and prevent it from looking overdone and messy. Introduce only the furniture you'll actually be using in the space. A bed and chest of drawers is likely all you'll need. Omit the nightstand and replace it with a small shelf attached to the wall near the bed. The chest that you normally keep at the foot of your bed will likely fit nicely in your closet. Keep knickknacks at a minimum as they often end up looking like clutter. The visual impact of the orange and blue combination should be the focal point of the room.
