How to Decorate Using Blue at Thanksgiving

Traditional Thanksgiving colors are those most associated with autumn: brown, orange, yellow, rust and copper. There's no hard and fast rule though that says you can't introduce your own color to the Thanksgiving decor. According to a poll by Crayola, blue was the number one answer when people were asked to name their favorite color. Blue is a shade found in nature and therefore works well with other colors of fall. It's an easy color to use as an accent or can stand alone as the star of the palette.

Instructions

    • 1

Set the tone with blue. Even if you're just having friends and family over for the holiday, send old-fashioned invitations printed on a blue background. Address them using blue ink and find stamps with a primarily blue design. Stand cattails that you've gathered outside the front door, wrapped in bright blue ribbon so that they're the first thing guests see as they arrive.

    • 2

Offer guests mixed blue drinks like Blue Sapphires, Dark Lagoon or Dolphin Foam, or non-alcoholic beverages such as a Citrus Twist Mocktail with a drop of blue food coloring.

    • 3

Display flowers indigenous to New England. A spectacular display of flowers grown in New England makes a huge design statement. Include such varieties as Blue Flag Iris, Nikko Blue Hydrangea and New England Aster.

    • 4

Thread blue throughout the details. Set the table with touches of blue. Place a navy blue runner along the length of the table layered over a crisp white tablecloth. Use blue linen napkins or blue napkin rings and light blue place cards.

    • 5

Make a unique centerpiece consisting of three pillar candles of varying sizes and surrounded by ears of blue corn, blueberries and figs.
