How to Decorate With Desert Pastels

Purchase your paint colors from a selection of neutral, earth-toned shades. Use a combination of one or more pastel shades: sand, soft cream, taupe, teal and pink.

Visit flea markets or antiques stores to locate rustic-looking furniture. These pieces can be weathered and flawed, which only adds to the Southwestern feel. You can find them a place in your home without refinishing, or you can paint select furnishings in a slightly brighter earthy shade such as a bright sky blue.

Place several small lamps with slightly lucent fabric lampshades to recreate the feeling of the desert sun shining. Avoid harsh lighting when you are decorating with pastels, opting instead for soft points of light that will recreate the desert feel.

Acquire rugs and textiles in a variety of prints to use throughout the home. Navajo blankets can add a splash of brighter color while adding a feeling of nostalgia and culture to your home. Feel free to mix and match blankets, rugs, pillows and wall hangings.

Add pottery and interesting display pieces. Terra-cotta pottery adds a bit of contrast against the pastel, while adding an authentic Southwestern feel.

Add hearty, easy-to-care-for cactuses and other interesting succulents to your decor to build upon the earthy theme. The desert pastel decor is a cactus lover's dream.
