Colors of 1918 Craftsman Bedrooms

Craftsman style American homes, also known as Mission Style, Prairie Style, Arts and Crafts and Bungalow style, are unique to America. They appealed to buyers who wanted to put the excesses of the Victorian and Edwardian eras behind them; where mass-production and embellishments were the rage and bold and brassy were the style. The end of World War I brought a simpler outlook on life to those who wanted to settle into a home evocative of all that was good, solid, natural and calm. Bedroom colors were important to the craftsman styling and were an intimate expression of the link with nature that people were looking to create.
  1. Colors of Nature

    • A sunrise or sunset is bold, colorful and intense. Mute those colors and you will have a palette for Craftsman home interiors. Add earth tones, like a muted terra cotta, a pale yellow, buff, taupe, charcoal, linen and whitewash, and the combinations of colors for a Craftsman-style bedroom are unlimited.

    Create a Mood

    • A bedroom is a room for peace, harmony and unity. None of the colors should be too bold, which fits in perfectly with the Craftsman color palette. Select a mossy green for the walls and trim the moldings in acadia white. If your ceilings are low, continue the white onto the ceilings. If they are high, add white to the green to dilute it, and use the paler tone on the ceiling.

    Floors

    • Wood floors typify nature, which is indicative of the Craftsman style. Oak or pine, laid in wide planks, complement the decor. Use striped Craftsman-style rugs in off-white and green or off-white and terra cotta on each side of the bed.

    Bedding

    • Keeping to your theme of nature-inspired colors, your bedding selection is wide open. Many simple prints contain the greens and whites you've selected for your walls, and your goal is to add brown tones to the mix. Craftsman-style fabrics of repetitive patterns can be used for a duvet or bedspread, with complementary fabrics on a side chair or vanity bench. A desert-inspired pattern will bring muted sunset shades into the Craftsman bedroom.

    Accessories

    • Craftsman-style lighting is finely shaped in a linear fashion. Variations on the Tiffany lamp designs crafted by Frank Lloyd Wright are framed in wood and metal and feature glass panes in muted colors. Once the light is lit, a soft glow emerges. Keep shelving accessories to a minimum as craftsman bedrooms are simple, clean and neat.
