How to Decorate a Plaid Tablecloth

Draping your table in plaid can be a bold decorative move, since plaid is notoriously difficult to match with other patterns and colors. The key to making plaid work on your table is to choose one or two colors from the pattern against which to match decorative items, while not going overboard on extras for the table. Apart from the decorative element of using a plaid tablecloth, keep in mind that the table also needs to be functional as an eating area.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose one or two colors from the plaid pattern against which to match decorative items, such as flowers, that you decide to place on the table. For example, if the pattern is blue, pink, purple and white, pick one or two of those colors. This will ensure that decorations will complement the pattern rather than detract from it.

    • 2

Opt to use neutral-colored plates, napkins and silverware. When you introduce additional, bright color with your plates, etc., it makes the table look overly busy. Stick with neutrals so that the dramatic tablecloth remains the focal point, and any items you place on top will enhance the pattern. Good neutral colors include black, navy blue, white, ivory and cream.

Avoid placing too many decorative items on the table. If you plan to set flowers on the table, for example, then also adding candles and other trinkets might be overkill. If you opt for a candle display, place the flowers in another spot in the kitchen or dining room. Choose a major decorative item, and perhaps one smaller accent item, and let the tablecloth "do the rest of the talking."

Add contrast with place mats. While the place mats should match the color scheme of the plaid to unify the table design, you can add a dash of flair with pattern contrast. For example, if the plaid is white, red and black, you can add visual interest by using red and white polka-dotted mats (with small dots). Just remember to select mats that match one or two of the tablecloth's colors.
