Paint Ideas for Dark-Colored Rooms

Black

• Even those who like dark-colored rooms may shy away from black as a wall color unless they understand how to use it in a decorating scheme. For the boldest of interior decorators, it's possible to cover all the walls in a room with black paint. A black lacquer paint in an Asian-themed room looks good. However, if you feel like you need to ease into this color on the wall, you have options. For example, paint all the walls black, but paint the exposed beams and trim white.

Chocolate Brown

• Chocolate brown paint works well with many decorating styles. This brown adds a fitting backdrop for safari-themed bedroom, providing a sharp contrast to decorative elements such as zebra or leopard skin rugs. Chocolate brown also takes well to some trendier color combinations such as pink and brown. The brown will balance out the pink, making the room look grounded visually. To embrace the dark colors of this room, use brown as the main color and pink or another light color as the accent color. Finally, use brown to set the tone for a retro-style dark room. To set up your brown retro space, add some orange throw pillows to a brown leather couch and lay down a brown or dark orange area rug on the floor.

Gray

• For those who have a particular fondness for the color of the skies during a storm, gray has much to offer. Go with a two-toned paint combination to add a bit of visual variety; paint the walls a dark gray and then paint light gray stripes on top of the dark gray. To really use this color to help to create this type of ambiance in your dark-colored room, paint the walls a deep blue, such as cobalt or cerulean. To add even more visual interest to the paint, have the paint textured with another, lighter color of blue. This creates a Mediterranean-style look in the room. Enhance the effect that the blue walls will have on the room by hanging a large mirror over the fireplace mantel and flank the mirror with candle sconces with blue glass bulbs.
