Clean and clear your space. Remove everything from the room. This will allow you to imagine the room with its new beach theme and visualize the space with the intended colors. Floors should be free of debris, and walls should be washed in preparation for new paint.
Cover the surfaces. This includes wall color, floor coverings and window treatments. White or light blue walls are optimal because they create light and will not close in a small space. If the floors are hardwood, keep them in a natural wood finish. If they are a neutral carpet, layer on an area rug with shades of blue, brown and white. On the windows, sheer white floor-length curtains will allow light to penetrate into the room, supporting the beach theme.
Move in the furniture. Consider the size, color and texture of the pieces. One or two large pieces are enough for most rooms. You can paint an old armoire a crackled white to coordinate with the other surfaces in the room. This can also store additional sheets and blankets or support a television set. A cozy couch, upholstered or slip-covered, will anchor a corner of the room and provide a relaxing retreat. Large pieces should remain a neutral shade or white; smaller pieces such as coffee tables, chairs and end tables can be in blues and browns.
Accessorize with accents in the colors of the beach theme. You can fill glass table lamps with blue sea glass, white sand dollars, or sand and shells. Candles in the coordinating colors will offer color and a relaxing feeling. Throw blankets carry on the beach atmosphere and provide a splash of color. Art on the walls, books on the coffee table and throw pillows on the couch will complete the color palette of white, blue and brown.
