How to Brighten Dark Kitchens

When you have a dark, soulless kitchen, you may be tempted to go to the extreme of painting everything white in a desperate attempt to make things brighter. Yet this can take the room from dreary and dungeonesque to cold, clinical and uninviting. Instead, add colors and elements that will make your kitchen welcoming and warm while adding a brighter look.

Hang a decorative mirror made of Mylar -- reflective material that resists shattering -- underneath a range hood that houses a dark space over the stove. The mirror will open up the space with its reflective qualities and add some depth to the space. Mirrors also work in other areas of the kitchen if over the stove isn't the right spot.

Choose warm colors -- particularly pastels -- over bright white shades of paint to color the walls. Peaches and yellows can brighten a space without making it seem cold and stark. If you can handle more-intense color, such as deep reds or oranges, go for it. But be careful -- too much can prove overwhelming.

Repaint, refinish or replace cabinetry -- depending on what your budget allows. If you choose to repaint, choose a light, neutral shade such as eggshell or off-white. If you choose to refinish the cabinets, strip them down to bare wood and stain them with a light wood stain. If you invest in replacement cabinets, opt for those that are made of light wood.

Install lighting underneath cabinets to illuminate dark areas. Change out dim lighting with LED lighting that doesn't put off heat like halogen or incandescent bulbs.

Add a window or two to the kitchen if you're up for a remodel. Windows can let in natural light and brighten a kitchen instantly.
