Choose your color scheme. Pick two or three coordinating colors to create your scheme. Avoid using more than three colors, as this can work the opposite of your goal, making your bedroom look uncoordinated and thrown together. Pick relaxing hues such as pastels, deep blues, and turquoise, and natural colors like brown, ivory and taupe.
Decide where you want the color. If most of your furniture has a neutral tone, consider adding accessories with bright hues. If you have toned-down accessories, punch up the color with a bold statement piece in a bright hue. A fire-engine red bed headboard will add a bright pop of color against white walls and black-and-white accessories.
Keep your colors in harmony. Consider picking one bold hue, such as mustard yellow, and pairing it with two softer hues, like chocolate brown and deep purple. Let your signature color stand out with large furniture pieces and accessories, while the softer colors support the main hue in smaller accessories and diminutive patterns.
Draw the focus to color with bold patterns. A big geometric print on pillows, or a large animal print on a comforter makes a bold statement. Use pattern to draw attention to the color in your color scheme.
Use shape in conjunction with color. Signature items that stand out and look different from the rest of your decor will get more attention than those that blend in with the room. Choose a piece with a defining look, such as blown glass, abstract art, or a bold-patterned lamp to highlight your use of color.
