Themes for Black and White Kitchens

Using black and white in your kitchen will allow you to create a variety of diverse looks by updating a few accessories to change the theme of the room. Black-and-white color schemes can be elegant and sophisticated or casual and quirky, depending on how you use the colors. Due the neutral nature of both colors, you can also incorporate nearly any theme or accent color in the room for a fresh look.
  1. Retro

    • Create a retro look using a black-and-white checkered tile floor. The cabinets can be white or a bright accent color that was popular during the 1950s, such as red or turquoise. Alternatively, paint the wall behind the cabinets in a bright color for contrast and interest while staying true to the theme. Keep the walls and cabinets white if you want the option of easily updating your kitchen theme later. Use white or stainless steel appliances in retro shapes if possible. Add a Formica table with chrome and black vinyl seat cushions to the breakfast bar or table for an authentic spin.

    Italian Chefs

    • Black countertops, white cabinets and black-and-white tile floors will set the scene for an Italian chef-themed kitchen. Use dish towels and pot holders in a black-and-white checked pattern or featuring images of happy Italian chefs decked out in white chef's hats, jackets and checkered pants. Novelty chef items, such as cabinet knobs, wine racks, tiles, cookie jars and figurines, are widely available to help you accessorize your kitchen. Hang prints of Italian chefs in different humorous poses to complete the look.

    Country Charm

    • Hardwood floors or nearly any simple tile will work on the floor for a country-themed kitchen. Solid white cabinets with glass doors and black or dark wood countertops will round out the major details. Use white wainscoting or black-and-white tiles as a backsplash. Copper or stainless steel pots, pans and accessories can add to the country charm. Include motifs of farm animals such as cows, if you want a farm-fresh feeling, to stick to an all black-and-white look. Jars, rugs, dish towels and wall decor can have black cow spots or images of black-and-white cows.

    Modern

    • Use an all black-and-white color scheme with stainless steel for a sleek and modern look. Black stone counters with a shiny finish will pop against glossy white cabinets and paint. Alternatively, use black cabinets against white walls or white cabinets against black walls. Black or stainless-steel appliances will keep the kitchen streamlined and sleek looking. Keep accessories to a minimum to stay true to the clean lines and minimalist look of modern decor. Glass or stainless canisters to hold necessary counter items are OK, though anything you can store in the pantry or cupboards should remain out of sight. A simple plant or clear vase filled with fresh fruit can add a hint of color to the kitchen.
