Paint the walls behind the couch before you hang any decorations. A fresh coat of paint adds pizazz and flair to an otherwise ordinary room and can positively impact the appearance of any decor you place on your walls. Use a color that complements your couch, rather than a color that matches. For example, don't paint a wall blue if your couch is also blue. Instead, opt for a deep red or a pale yellow that emphasizes the blueness of your sofa.
Walk through the rest of your house to evaluate the themes and concepts you already have in place throughout your home. Perhaps your living room will be an offshoot of ideas you already have in place, but maybe your living room will present a new, complex theme not already illustrated in your home. Write down colors, ideas and decorations you already have in your home so you can repeat a theme or avoid using one that's present in another room.
Hang a large mirror that complements your sectional couch. Mirrors often give the illusion of a larger space, so they are preferable if your home is small. You can hang a vintage mirror to give your room a historic look, or you might prefer a more modern, artsy mirror for a chic appearance.
Hang up personally important items, such as your wedding bouquet, a christening gown, softball T-shirt or favorite poster if you want your living room to have a personal appearance. Unusual items make great conversation starters and are preferable if you find it difficult to start chatting with visitors.
Mount a small shelf to place a few items, such as a vase with flowers or a small figurine. Choose an ordinary wood shelf or paint the shelf the same color as your couch. This way, the shelf will complement the couch while also contrasting with the color of your wall. A small shelf also gives your guests the impression that you decorated with thoughtfulness and careful creativity.
