How to Install Tile Backsplash Sheets Around Power Outlets

Some areas of your kitchen might seem to get messier than others. For example, that small space in the wall behind your oven, sink or a food preparation area might get constantly covered in grease and other food particles. The solution is to install a tile backsplash in these areas using tile sheets. This is a simple process, but it can get just a bit complicated when you have to factor in power outlets.

Things You'll Need

  • Tape measure
  • Wet saw
  • Thinset mortar
  • Screwdriver
  • Straight-edge trowel
  • Pencil
  • Grout
  • Grout float
  • Sponge

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the length and width of the backsplash area.

    • 2

Lay out several lengths of tile sheets to fit the backsplash. Tile sheets often come in 12-by-12-inch sheets.

    • 3

Use the measurements of the backsplash to determine where the tile sheet edges need to be cut.

    • 4

Remove the parts of the tile that block access to the outlet with a wet saw. Cut parallel lines first, and then cut the inside part of the tile last to ensure that it breaks off evenly.

    • 5

Take off the cover from the power outlet by unscrewing the screw in each corner. The tile sheets can be installed right up against the outlets, and then the cover can be replaced.

    • 6

Spread thinset mortar onto the backsplash surface using a straight-edge trowel. Press the tile sheets in place that do not need to be fitted around the outlet.

    • 7

Set the sheets that do need to be fitted around the power outlet onto the backsplash. Do not press them into place. Mark where they need to be cut with a pencil.

    • 8

Use the wet saw to cut the tile sheets that need to be fitted around the outlet. Then press them into place with the others. Spread the thinset mortar to the backs of tiles that need to be individually installed around the power outlet.

    • 9

Wait for the thinset to cure overnight. Then spread grout across the tile sheets using a grout float. This improves the appearance of the tile sheets and reinforces them. Remove extra grout first with the float and then with a damp sponge.
