How to Make a Swirl Texture on Walls

Walls with a standard flat finish is perfectly suitable for some homeowners, but you might have bigger plans for your home décor. For example, instead of just painting over the standard wall with a standard color, you can create a masterful swirl texture first. Add texture to the wall using drywall compound. The swirl texture is tough to mess up since the pattern can be random, meaning you can complete the whole project yourself with no professional assistance.

Instructions

    • 1

Scoop up the drywall compound using a trowel. Get a generous amount.

    • 2

Spread the drywall compound evenly across the wall surface, using one trowel scoop at a time.

    • 3

Place the trowel over the drywall compound on the wall and create a swirl by using your hand and wrist to direct the handle of the trowel, as opposed to your entire arm. This will put less pressure on the drywall compound, creating a wispier pattern.

    • 4

Overlap the side of the first swirl by up to half and create the next swirl in the drywall compound.

    • 5

Continue spreading drywall across the wall and then making a swirl texture over it, continuing to use one trowel scoop at a time.

    • 6

Stand back every minute or two. If you see a swirl you're not happy with, smooth it out with your trowel and create a new one before the plaster has time to set.
