How to Make Paint for Marbling

Creating paint for marbling is a relatively easy way to achieve the look of marble without the big price tag. For the cost of a few cans of paint, some household items and a trip to the art supply store, you can upgrade the look of your home from ordinary to luxury. The technique does not require as much mixing or making of paint as it does several days of layering different paint mixes. The result is worth the effort.

Things You'll Need

  • Semigloss white eggshell paint
  • Linseed oil
  • Black oil paint
  • Brushes -- soft and hard varieties; professional or household brushes will work (even make-up brushes!)
  • Feather
  • White spirit

Instructions

    • 1

Paint the surface to be marbled with the eggshell paint and allow to dry. The paint may be left overnight to ensure that the area is completely dry.

    • 2

Add a layer of linseed oil over the eggshell coat the next day. The linseed oil will cause the next layers of paint to dry more slowly and give you more time to create the marble effect.

    • 3

Mix black oil paint with eggshell and spread the grey paint randomly on the surface. Create varying shades of grey by mixing the black and eggshell in different proportions and spread these shades in other areas.

    • 4

Use your brushes to spread the colors, soak up any extra paint and soften the surface. Use a fine brush and feather to create veins in the marble.

    • 5

Create a translucent glaze by mixing equal parts white spirit and oil paint. Apply the glaze over the completed marble surface.
