Curtain Ideas for a Cream Sofa and Black Table

Whatever the style, a cream sofa paired with a black table makes a bold statement. But you may feel timid about what to do for the next step in decorating your room: the window treatments. Available fabrics, along with ready-made curtains and other window coverings, provide a number of directions in which you can confidently go to achieve attractive results.
  1. Patterns of Black and Cream

    • Many attractive fabrics for contemporary and traditional styles are available in patterns that combine black and cream. A single fabric may suit your taste for use in long or short draperies as well as top treatments. Two or more patterns can coordinate in the same window treatment for added interest. For example, long draperies in a black and cream stripe can be topped with a valance or cornice in a floral or other pattern of the same colors.

    Patterns Using Other Colors

    • You can select fabrics for window treatments in subtle colors that still allow your cream sofa and black table to be the stars of your room. Backgrounds of muted green, blue or orange tones with patterns that contain touches of black and cream can soften the contrast between the sofa and table. Choose contemporary or traditional fabrics to suit the style of your furniture, and repeat them in throw pillows and accessories.

Cream With a Pop of Color or Black

    • Cream draperies, swags or other treatments that are trimmed in black or a bold color can enhance the drama that your combination of sofa and table provide. If you prefer to avoid the expense of custom-made, you can trim ready-made window treatments yourself. Purchase a fancy traditional fabric trim in black, red or your favorite color, and add it to the edges of draperies or top treatments from a department store. Or sew bands of solid-color fabric to the bottom hems or tops for a smart modern look.

    Naturals and Textures

    • Textures such as nubby silk, linen and bamboo in natural tones complement black and cream very well. For a modern look, choose bamboo shades or breezy linen drapery panels. For traditional decor, formal panel draperies with or without swags in a cream or pale wheat tone can be sewn or purchased ready-made in nubby silk or a synthetic resembling silk.

    Other Neutrals

    • Coffee, mocha, tan, taupe or beige can add to the sophistication of cream and black as can varying shades of gray, whether warm (with yellow undertones) or cool (with blue undertones). When used together, two or more shades of any of these neutrals will act as color in contrast against cream and black. Limit the number of tones to avoid a busy look, or select a pattern for draperies that contains the tones you desire.
