How to Design With an All White Interior

White creates the illusion of space inside a room and gives the owner a fresh slate to design on. It is also commonly used in apartments because it is neutral and inexpensive to maintain. Whatever the case, it is possible to create a vibrant space from an all-white base. Use different shades of white, color, texture and wood accents to give your room life without having to alter the wall color or give up your security deposit.

Instructions

    • 1

Add decorative elements of varying shades of white. For instance, create flow through the room by adding a beige throw rug or ivory window coverings. The subtle variations will allow you to play with different shades of white.

    • 2

Install white furniture along the wall. Set white bookshelves, dressers and side tables against the wall to allow the objects housed on the pieces to stand out. This will allow create the illusion that the space is larger because the furniture is blending in with the wall color.

    • 3

Add black elements to the space. The black will create a bold statement no matter how heavily or sparingly it is used. Create a subtle contrast by using smaller black pieces, from lamps to picture frames. Choose a black couch or large black mirror to make the contrast more obvious.

    • 4

Include wood elements inside the room. Incorporate wood-trimmed furniture or install wooden trim around the walls. The wood will blend well with the white backdrop while creating a warmer, richer feel.

    • 5

Add elements of color into the room. Any color will automatically pop inside a clean white space. Use a single color to create a cohesive theme throughout the space. Avoid using several different colors, as this takes away from the white backdrop.
