Ideas for Painted Square Walls in Kids' Bedrooms

Paint an interesting design on your child's walls to add interest to his bedroom. Use the colors he likes or include numerous colors that will go with nearly any color scheme you could think of so you won't have to paint every time he wants his bedroom decor updated. The colors, sizes of the squares and pattern you choose should complement his bedroom without overwhelming the space.
  1. Colors

    • The colors you use on the wall should complement the colors throughout the room, such as the other walls, the furniture and the textiles. Blue squares will clash with a pink and purple bedroom, while various shades of pink squares will work with a pink and purple room, a pink and white room, a monochromatic white room or an all-pink room. Use two or three different colors if the child is set on those colors or goes between them as favorites. Alternatively, use all the primary colors in the squares to provide a backdrop that will work with any color scheme.

    Patterns

    • Make a grid of squares on one wall. Keep the squares large, such as 1 foot by 1 foot for each square. The squares could go in a particular color order, or choose random colors or shades for a playful look. Consider painting a border around the room of smaller squares if you don't like the idea of a solid wall of squares. For example, the border squares could be about 3 inches by 3 inches. Don't paint large squares on every wall, as that will create a busy, chaotic look.

    Furniture

    • Simple furniture will not compete with the squares on the wall. Place solid wood, white or black furniture against the wall with squares. Use solid bedding that incorporates one of the colors from the wall, or use a square pattern, such as squares on the sheets with a solid comforter. Dress up the furniture with square details, such as novelty square knobs on the dresser or add a small square border on the headboard. Alternatively, glue small square tiles around a square mirror to hang above the dresser on the opposite side of the room as the accent wall.

    Details

    • Incorporate small details into the room, such as adding different colored shapes inside the squares. Other shapes might include stars, hearts or circles. Accessories with square patterns can tie the room together if you use the pattern sparingly. Choose one accessory with a square pattern, such as the rug, a lampshade, the curtains or throw pillows. Add other shapes in your accessories for variety and balance.
