How to Decorate a Distressed Wall

A distressed wall is characterized by a worn, dilapidated appearance. A distressed wall may actually have peeling paint and be physically worn out, or your distressed wall may be painted with the intent of looking worn. Because a distressed wall typically consists of several uneven colors, you may find that decorating it requires a bit of thought and planning.

Instructions

    • 1
Hang a mirror on your distressed wall.

Hang a large mirror in the center of your distressed wall. Opt for a mirror with a thick, wooden frame to offset the multicolored wall. The frame should be a color that differs from your wall's primary color. For example, if you have a mostly red wall, opt for a black frame. For a simple, uncomplicated look, choose a round or oval mirror and place it in the center of the wall. If you plan to hang additional decor, opt for a square or rectangular mirror.

      Choose thick picture frames.

Place pictures with thick, wooden frames on your wall. Avoid metal or glass-edged frames, as these can class with the appearance of your distressed wall. Choose pictures or images that are black-and-white so the color of the frame contrasts with the wall.

A large canvas painting accentuates your wall.

Opt for a piece of unusual art to display on your distressed wall. Consider a large canvas art piece that will generate conversation with your guests. A painted canvas can remain unframed and still accentuate the unusual appearance of your distressed wall.

A floating shelf displays special items.

Hang a floating shelf on your distressed wall to display special collections or items. Paint the shelf a solid color and allow it to dry before you place items on the shelf. Remember that with shelves, less is more, so place only a few items on each shelf.
