How to Decorate a Raised Split Level Home

A raised split level home offers a bit of variety from that of traditional modern homes. Two main levels means that you have the option to decorate each level in a unified way that matches and corresponds to the other, or you can decorate each level of your raised split level home differently. Your home should not only be a comfortable, relaxing place to come home to, but welcomes guests and visitors. This endeavor doesn't need to be difficult, and can be an enjoyable project for the entire family.

Place a basket and a small shelf in the entryway of your home. Split level homes typically have a small landing by the front door before the house "splits" into two levels. Place a basket next to the front door as a catchall for family members to place shoes in. A shelf gives your family a place for backpacks and purses and minimizes the amount of items left on the stairs.

Arrange doormats in your entryway, as well as at the bottom and top of each staircase. A raised split-level home forces your family members to either walk up or down stairs immediately. Choose decorative doormats to minimize the amount of mud and dirt tracked on your stairs, as well as to prevent slips and falls when entering or leaving a staircase.

Opt for furniture that is easy to move. Since you'll have to carry furniture up or down stairs to get it in and out of your house, choose lightweight furniture when possible to minimize the amount of moving you do. Since the downstairs portion of a raised split level home is at least partially underground, realize that you could experience flooding at some point. Lightweight furniture simplifies the process of moving things around should flood damage become a possibility.

Hang a large mirror on the wall in your lower level to make the space appear larger. For an empty wall, choose an oval or round mirror. For walls that contain pictures, posters or artwork, choose a rectangular or square mirror with a solid frame.

Take advantage of your garage as a multifunction room. Most raised split-level homes have a sizable garage that can easily double as a playroom, family room, exercise room or storage area. If you don't plan to park your car in your garage, don't let the space go to waste. Decorate the room with posters, area rugs and comfortable furniture. If you plan to store things in the garage, store your items on crates or shelves, rather than directly on the floor. Split level garages are partially underground, which means mold growth and water damage is a possibility.
