Paint Colors for a Living Room With a Navy Couch

A navy blue couch serves as a focal point for a living room, but it can complicate the color choices for the walls. Navy is a bold color that falls into the cool toned color group. This serves as a starting point for your color choices. You can choose coordinating, complementary or contrasting colors to offset your navy blue couch or to highlight it in the room.
  1. White Walls With Accents

    • If you want the couch to remain the sole focal point for the room, the rest of the room must be in the background. Paint the walls a bright and clean white, and choose bright accent colors such as a true red or sunny yellow to avoid washing out the room. Use throw pillows or vibrant-colored artwork containing these colors to serve as accents throughout the space.

    Light Pastel Colors

    • Light pastel colors, when combined with a navy blue couch, will bring a feeling of peace and tranquility to the living room. The most obvious choice is a light pastel blue for the walls since this will coordinate with the navy in the couch. To find a contrasting color for navy blue, refer to a color wheel. Yellow is opposite of blue, so use a light pastel or buttery yellow to warm up the space. To complement the blue in the couch, choose a light pastel green, such as spearmint, for a cool feeling.

    Bold-Colored Walls

    • If you want to go all out and have a bold room, choose a bold color for the walls. Typically, unless the room is quite large, it is best to use one wall as an accent wall for bold color, while the remaining walls are white or lighter in color. For a bold look, paint one wall behind the couch a bright, fire-engine red. This will serve to contrast nicely with the navy in the couch. For a more elegant look, choose a dark hunter green for your accent wall.

    Using the Color Wheel

    • If you are still stumped on what color to paint your walls, a color wheel can be a useful tool. Navy blue coordinates or complements with several different shades of blue or green. You can also use neutral colors that will fade into the background, making the couch stand out. For example, a light beige or tan color will coordinate well with navy blue. Gray is another color choice, particularly a light, dove gray, that will also work with navy.
