How to Build Wooden Panels for a Room Divider

When you have a large room, whether it’s a loft-style studio or a spacious living room, how to segment the space can seem overwhelming. Room dividers provide a solution, allowing you to create anything from a comfortable work nook to a separate sleeping area. While there are plenty of store-bought options available, making your own room divider gives you control over size and appearance. Creating the wooden panels for the divider is the first step.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine the measurements for each panel of the room divider based on your coverage needs. A typical paneled room divider consists of three separate segments of equal size that you can fold up when it's not in use.

    • 2

Draw the outline of a panel onto a piece of plywood. Use a piece of wood such as a 1-by-4 or a long straightedge for help in creating straight lines.

    • 3

Place the plywood on two sawhorses. Hold it in place with “C” clamps for security. Cut out the panels with a circular saw, using the lines for guidance.

    • 4

Smooth the edges of the plywood with a sanding attachment placed on a drill.

    • 5

Paint each panel in your color choice. Use one color for the whole thing, make each panel a different color for variety or paint a mural in each panel for an artistic appearance.
