Paint Ideas for Oak Floors in a Bedroom

Oak is the most commonly used and produced hardwood in the U.S., according to the website "Craftsman Style." If you are lucky enough to have oak flooring in your bedroom, it may seem like a difficult task to find a paint color to complement it. However, there are several decor styles that use a color palette that will make the most of your oak floor to create a pretty bedroom.
  1. Country Style

    • White oak is perfectly suited to country styles of decor such as cottage, English country and garden styles. These styles are light and airy with a clean, fresh look. Use light, neutral colors on the walls that reflect the undertones of the wood. For example, if the oak floor has a yellowish-brown undertone, use a neutral color with warm yellow undertones. Create an accent wall with a country-style wallpaper. If the wood has white or creamy-brown undertones, use a rich cream color. Combine white-painted furniture with pieces with a natural wood finish, and add pretty, light fabrics with delicate floral prints.

    Zen Style

    • Japanese zen style is a way of creating a calming, peaceful and relaxing atmosphere. Raw materials such as wood and bamboo combine with earthy, neutral colors and minimal furniture and accessories to create a clean, open space. As nearly all flooring in Japanese zen styles is wood, this is another decorating option for a room with a white oak floor. Use earthy colors on the walls such as soft blues, light browns and muted green tones. Accent with white for a serene, peaceful look. Bamboo furniture complements oak beautifully, and a natural fiber floor rug and potted plants complete the look.

    Fall Inspired

    • If you have a red oak rather than white oak floor, the undertones of the wood will be very different. Instead of white or creamy-browns, red oak has undertones of reddish-browns and orange-browns, which is the perfect color palette for a fall-inspired room. Use warm colors in muted tones such as rusty reds, burnt umber, deep oranges and deep yellow. In a small room, keep the walls fairly light. Use a neutral color with warm brown undertones and introduce the range of other colors with accessories. Add a floor rug with a fall-themed pattern such as a maple leaf print.

    Rustic

    • Rustic is another decor style that complements a red oak floor. The good thing about this style of decor is the way different woods are mixed and matched, making matching the paint color to one specific type of wood less important. Everything in the room should have a well-worn, used look, with no glossy finishes or elaborate detail. Colors should reflect the outdoors. Use earthy colors similar to a fall-inspired color palette but in slightly lighter tones. Stone cladding creates a fantastically rustic accent wall, and the warm tones of the red oak along with a rustic tapestry prevent it from looking cold.
