How to Make a Brown & Burgundy Living Room Pop

Burgundy is a rich, warm color that looks luxurious and royal. It combines well with brown, another warm, natural tone; however, together, burgundy and brown can be dark and leave your living room feeling overwhelmed and crowded. To give pop to your decorating scheme, you will need to bring in some lighter tones, which will provide contrast, visually open the room and add a touch of cheerful color to play off the darker burgundy and brown.

Instructions

    • 1

Paint your walls a soft tan, creamy white, buttery yellow or palest apricot.

    • 2

Cover the floor with a rug in tones that match the walls, with a floral, Oriental or abstract pattern.

    • 3

Hang a chandelier or ceiling light with a Tiffany or glass bowl. Glass will add sparkle to your room, and good lighting will keep it from being too dark.

    • 4

Set patterned throw pillows in yellow, tan, white or turquoise blue on your couch.

    • 5

Look for artwork that has bright, cheery colors and complements your wall and accent colors. Frames in burgundy or brown will keep the rich feel of your living room alive.

    • 6

Place a plant stand near the window with the most light and fill it with plants in brightly colored pots.

    • 7

Display your favorite collectibles in a hutch or on shelves. Glass, ceramic, bright metal or brightly colored accents will add the most pop to your room.

    • 8

Wrap a string of twinkle lights around your curtain rods for a touch of whimsy that will brighten the whole room.
