How to Decorate a Redesigned Attic Space

When you think of an attic space, you might visualize a room full of dusty boxes, full length mirrors or even ghosts, but a redesigned attic space gives you the opportunity to quickly get rid of these preconceived ideas of what an attic should be. Your redesigned attic can be a stylish place to work on your novel, an area you practice guitar or even a cozy guest bedroom. However you intend to use your attic, there are a number of ways you can decorate your attic space.

Organize the items you store in the attic. Even with fresh carpet and new paint, you likely have a few boxes that you need to store in your attic space. Keep these organized and enhance the appearance of your attic. Store boxed items in sturdy plastic bins, rather than cardboard boxes. Clearly label the exterior of each box and stack them in a corner or off to the side. Alternatively, you can place must-have storage items in a wooden cupboard or decorative trunk.

Place lights throughout the room. Whether you opt for floor, table or wall lamps is up to you, but proper lighting is vital in any attic space. Attic windows tend to be small, so light up the room with several stylish lamps.

    • 3

Place several decorative throw rugs on the floor to brighten up your space. Whether you have wall-to-wall carpeting or wooden floors, choose a couple of brightly colored area rugs for your attic. In addition to offering warmth and comfort for your feet, area rugs enhance the colors that are already present in your room and help prevent the space from seeming too dark or dreary.

Minimize the amount of wall art you hang. While it's perfectly fine to hang a picture or two, the slanted walls of an attic can quickly become cluttered with too many portraits. Instead of hanging up your entire photo collection, choose one or two favorites and store the rest.

Choose comfortable, lightweight furniture for your attic room. Don't overwhelm yourself with heavy antiques, because moving items in and out of an attic is difficult. Instead, opt for simple items that are comfortable to sit in and easy to move.
