How to Decoupage a Piece of Furniture With Pictures

Decoupage creates the illusion that paper pictures are painted directly onto a surface. Furniture pieces, especially those made of wood, offer an ideal surface for decoupage. Adding decoupage to your furniture transforms it from ordinary to eye-catching. You can cover a headboard with decoupage or create a decorative border around a tabletop.

Instructions

    • 1

Clean the surface of the furniture piece where you’ll be placing the decoupage with a cloth dipped in dish soap and water. Allow the surface to dry thoroughly.

    • 2

Choose pictures to decoupage onto the furniture. Look through magazines, draw your own or download images from your computer. Cut out the pictures.

    • 3

Arrange the pictures on the surface to plan your layout. Rearrange them until you find the look you prefer.

    • 4

Spray each picture with a fine water mist. This will allow it to lay flat during the gluing process.

    • 5

Turn the pictures over and apply a thin layer of decoupage medium with a foam brush. Set them into place on the furniture. Use a soft cloth to smooth the pictures. Allow the decoupage to dry overnight.

    • 6

Apply a layer of clear varnish with a paintbrush over the decoupaged area. One coat will do the job but you can add additional coats to give the pictures an appearance of depth. Allow the varnish to dry thoroughly before using the furniture.
