Tropical Colors for Painted Walls

If you've visited any tropical locale, you've most likely been captivated by the vivid colors, from the turquoise of the sea to the scarlet of the passion flower and the multiple hues of the macaw. You've probably also admired the subtle and delicate hues -- the brown of the sand, for example, or the soft pinks and purples of an orchid. You may have returned home and decided to refresh your walls with one or more tropical colors. As you found while on your tropical getaway, you have a broad palette from which to choose.
  1. Soft Colors

    • If you love tropical hues but want to keep them a bit subdued, choose light shades of colors such as pink, green, yellow or blue. Paint your walls one or more of these colors. As you probably found on your vacation, these colors can go together in ways you hadn't considered yourself. Experiment with color combinations, such as soft pink and yellow. If you don't like it, you can always paint again. Complete your room with large, leafy plants and loosely-woven fabrics.

    Sea Colors

    • To recreate a beach-inspired tropical experience, choose wall colors inspired by sparkling turquoise waters and soft white sand. This is especially appropriate in spaces like bathrooms, and it's always easy to find lots of accessories, such as towels and seashell knickknacks. Paint your walls a tropical blue and your trim a soft sand. Alternatively, use the soft sand color in your flooring.

    Contrasting Colors

    • As Mother Nature does in the tropics, use hues that are opposite each other on the color wheel. This is a dramatic look. For example, choose a warm yellow orange for your walls and a deep bright blue for the trim. Alternatively, choose purple and green. Draw from the pair of colors when you decorate the rest of the room.

    Fresh Colors

    • To keep the look of your room clean and fresh, start with a white palette. Paint the walls a clean, crisp white, and use your tropical colors as accents. If you find white walls too stark, tint the white to recreate the color of a tropical beach.
