Painting Tips for Romantic Bedrooms

Romantic colors and décor don't have to be shades of red and pink or include tacky, heart-shaped accessories. To paint a room to make it romantic, there are many options to choose from. Romance is as much about tranquility and beauty as it is about passion, and there are many combinations of colors to convey these feelings.
  1. Naural and Light Colors

    • Light shades of green are natural and relaxing.

Soft and neutral colors make good paint combinations for a romantic bedroom. Lighter shades of green relax the eye and tones of blue bring down blood pressure and slow the heart rate. Combine these colors with neutral, off-white tones like linen and cream to accentuate natural wood and glass features that are in the room to add some texture and keep the soft colors from being to boring. Any bedroom, but especially a romantic one, should be beautiful and relaxing without being boring.

    Warm Colors

    • Orange can be vibrant and rich or tense and aggressive.

Strong, bright colors like red, purple and yellow are associated with energy and excitement but also tend to raise the level of irritability and aggression in a room. Indirect lighting or heavy drapes can help soften a color by reducing the light in the room. Mix dark reds or bright yellows with browns and other earth tones to give them a soft, rich look. Purple remains rich and vibrant even when very light, and dark purple makes a room sophisticated and elegant.

    Natural Themes

    • The Northern Lights make an impression with a mix of green, blue and purple tones.

Natural events like tropical sunsets or the Northern Lights can inspire painting ideas for romantic bedrooms. A yellow that would normally appear too aggressive in a bedroom can be combined with a light blue or deep orange to convey the appearance of an ocean sunset. Purple and green might not seem like a very likely combination until you see the romantic splendor of the Northern Lights. A combination of light, relaxing green and deep, sophisticated purple would make a bedroom look very alluring.

    Period Romance

    • You can give your bedroom a romantic theme by connecting it with a bygone era. Victorian or Colonial tones and features also can make a bedroom romantic. For example, intricate scrolling patterns along the tops of the walls, bright greens and dark browns define a Victorian bedroom and is easy to re-create with some stencils and paint. Both Colonial and Victorian romance might be more about wood stain than paint, as wood grain was traditionally added to Victorian rooms to make them feel more comfortable.
