How to Paint a Front Door Yellow

Yellow paint is a daring, eye-catching choice for a front door, but under the right circumstances, yellow could also be the perfect color. There are multiple advantages to painting your front door yellow — especially if you want to attract attention. While red is just as bright, it is probably more common and at the same time, more likely to fade with time. Light paints like yellow fade less, so it can boost your curb appeal for years to come.

Instructions

    • 1

Paint several samples of your favorite yellow paints on the door or on a scrap board, to determine the shade of yellow that best complements your home. Yellow paint comes in a wide variety, from bright primary yellow to creamy soft yellow, to earthy mustard. Deep, earthy yellow is appropriate for a house already made from an earth-colored material. Brighter yellows look right on homes in crisp, clean colors like light gray or even light blue.

Remove the door from the frame using a screw driver. Remove all hardware from the door, including the doorknob and knocker. Set these items and their screws aside.

    • 3

Cover the edges of any windows on the door with painter’s tape on both sides.

    • 4

Fill in cracks on the door using putty, then sand the putty to make the door look even and solid.

    • 5

Paint a coat of primer on the door and allow it to dry. Paint each side, then paint the edges of the door. Wait for the paint to dry. This is especially important if you are painting a dark-colored door, like one previously painted red.

Paint the first coat of yellow paint. Paint each side, then paint the edges. It’s not unlikely that you will need to paint multiple coats of paint in order to get the most even finish. Yellow paint is a very light color and unless your paint is very thick, you’ll need multiple coats. This is especially true if you’ve skipped the step of painting primer on the door first. Wait for the coats of paint to dry before applying additional coats.
