How to Choose a Paint Color for a Jack & Jill Bath

Color is a personal choice that reflects a homeowner's tastes and decorating skill. Jack and Jill bathrooms present a particularly difficult decorating problem when it comes to paint selection — joining two disparate rooms with the right color. Sometimes the paint color may seem an obvious choice; white paint can soothe a lot of issues. Other times, the adjoining rooms may require the need to exclude certain paint choices. For some homeowners, the situation may call for thinking outside the box.

Instructions

Look at the color schemes in each of the adjoining bedrooms and identify the neutral color. If it is the same neutral (same beige or same gray, for example), use it and its various shades for the bathroom. If the neutrals are different, take samples of each to the paint store — paint chips, pillows or sheets using the neutral color work as samples. Choose paint chips for a half dozen neutrals that work with both colors and make a paint selection from them.

Select an off-white paint color. If one bedroom is purple and the other is pink, an off-white with a touch of purple or red can tie the two rooms together. A lilac or a soft, pale shell pink are good examples. Complete the Jack and Jill bathroom by accessorizing with colors from both bedrooms.

Use a white paint shade such as antique, fawn or muslin. These shades provide a backdrop for colorful or traditional accessories, towels and shower curtains. White is a good choice when the tenants in each of the adjoining rooms are far apart in age range, tastes or are different genders.

Select a completely different paint color from those found in either bedroom. This can be a daring adventure but highly successful in a home where each room has its own topic or theme. For example, if one adjoining room is about ballerinas and the other is about monster trucks, choose a theme both parties can agree on, such as a tropical or outdoor theme. Then choose a paint color that fits the theme. A pale blue to signify water, a tropical green to represent palm trees or an exotic blue-green to match a tropical bird's feathers are good choices.

Look for a shared color between the bedrooms. Each room may have a different decorating theme, but they both may share the color green, blue or red. Select a bathroom paint color based on the shared decor color.
