How to Decorate a Room With a Striped Bed Set

Choosing your bedding before decorating your bedroom ensures that your bedding will complement the colors and style of the room to provide a comfortable and relaxing environment. Striped bedding adds design and dimension to a bedroom and provides at least two colors to determine the color scheme in the room. Most bedroom styles work best with a primary color, a secondary color and an accent color. Use all of the colors from the stripes if there are three or more colors, or add a third color throughout the bedroom if the bedding only has two colors.

Instructions

Paint the walls a light, soft or neutral color. If the striped bedding has three or more colors, use a neutral hue or your favorite color from the bedding on the walls. Use a different, but similar color on each wall if the stripes contain five or six colors and you want a bright and colorful room. For example, the walls could be cream, beige, light and medium blue if your bedding light, medium and dark blue along with cream, beige, black and white. Another idea is to paint the wall opposite the bed with a striped pattern that mimics the bedding, leaving the other three colors a simple and soft neutral shade.

Select bedroom furniture that works with the colors and style of the striped bedding. White or light wood toned furniture works with extremely bright stripes, such as orange and fuchsia, or dark stripes, such as navy and charcoal. Dark furniture, such as black, dark wood or chocolate brown works well with light and bright colors.

Add textiles throughout the room that complement the striped bedding. Hang striped valances above solid curtain panels or layer two curtain panels using two of the colors from the stripes. A solid rug in one of the colors from the bedding will work. Mix up different patterns using the same color scheme if you want something different, such as a black and white polka-dotted rug to go with a black and white striped bed set.

Hang artwork, pictures or mirrors that include at least one color from the stripes. For example, hang black and white pictures in purple frames or choose artwork with a lot of purple to complement purple striped bedding.

Accessorize the room with lamps, throw pillows, plants, candles or storage baskets or bins in the same colors as the striped bedding. Include stripes in a couple of accessories for a pulled-together look, such as a striped lampshade that matches the bedding.
