Teen Bedroom Furniture and Decorating Ideas

Instead of decorating your teen's bedroom yourself, let her in on the design. Your teen's room can be a personal expression of his interests and creativity. A teenager's bedroom is often a haven and more than just a place to sleep. Help your teen create the bedroom of her dreams that is a reflection of her taste and the colors and styles she enjoys.
  1. Chalkboard Wall

    • A cool, interesting addition to any teenager's wall is chalkboard paint. Even teens like to doodle, and a chalkboard wall can be the perfect place to scribble homework assignments, friends' phone numbers or even draw a personal calendar. Paint one wall with the chalkboard paint to serve as an accent wall, or just use chalkboard paint as a wide strip in the center of a wall that's painted another color.

    Daybed or Bunk Beds

    • Consider ditching a traditional bed setup for something a little more functional. A daybed can create a cozy atmosphere in a teen's room. Toss some throw pillows on the daybed while it's light out to make a comfortable homework nook or conversation couch, and let the daybed serve as a sleeping place at night. Daybeds come in many styles and designs and some even have storage drawers on the bottom. The beds don't take up as much space as a full bed and are multifunctional. Bunk beds are fun for boys or girls, and are handy for a teen that has overnight guests. Bunk beds can have desks built in that make them even more practical.

    Color

    • Don't shy away from color when you're decorating a teen's room. Go monochromatic with splashes of one particular color, such as bright pink, orange or blue; choose two colors and decorate with patterns that use those shades. Another option is to choose a color, such as blue, and use varying shades of it to decorate the room. Light blue, navy and turquoise can coexist beautifully and liven up a bedroom. Stick to a maximum of four colors and use them any way possible to add a festive look to the bedroom.

    Themes

    • Picking a theme is the easiest way to add your teenager's interests and hobbies into his room decor. If he is a sports fan, decorate with sports-themed bedding, wall art and decals. For a girl that loves flowers and romantic images, hang a canopy over her bed and use silk flowers to decorate it. Polka dots, birds, computers, vintage movies or animals can all be good themes for a teenager's decor. Framed, vintage movies posters can add something to a movie lover's room, and stick-on, glow-in-the-dark stars liven up a stargazer's ceiling.
