How to Redo an Indoor Fireplace

Fireplaces provide more than warmth on a cold winter’s night; they also give the space a focal point and an interesting architectural feature. However, after years of use and abuse, the fireplace will begin to look more like an eye sore than eye candy. Your issue might also be that your fireplace is out-of-date or out-of-place in your modern décor. There are several ways to redo your existing fireplace to help it fit in with your home’s look.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the soot, dirt and debris from the fireplace with the proper materials. For instance, use white vinegar to clean a brick fireplace or a mixture of one part water and one part hydrogen peroxide to restore a marble model. Many times, all the fireplace requires is a good cleaning to restore its appearance.

    • 2

Replace any cracked, loose or missing bricks from a stone fireplace. Fix the scratches in a marble model with polishing compound. Perform the repairs yourself with the proper tools, including replacement bricks and mortar for the stone model and polishing compound for a marble fireplace, or hire a professional to replace or repair the broken fireplace.

    • 3

Cover the brick fireplace with a fresh coat of paint. Clean the brick with soapy water and white vinegar before applying two to three thin layers of 100 percent acrylic paint. Choose a color that complements the room or use white to create a clean, fresh appearance.

    • 4

Replace the mantle. Pull down the old mantle and replace it with a new limestone, marble or wood model. Choose a model that matches your home’s décor. For instance, choose a rustic wood mantle for a log cabin feel or an antiqued piece for a shabby-chic feel.

Accessorize the existing fireplace. Remove the mantle entirely and hang a large framed photo or artwork over the fireplace. Set large decorative statues, vases or potted plants on both sides of the piece. Use the right accessories to conceal or enliven the old, out-of-date fireplace.
