How to Faux a Tudor Bed

The Tudor style reflects the furniture, fabrics and handcrafts that dominated 16th century England. Heavy wood furniture, high canopy bed frames, rich fabrics, handmade embellishments and vivid colors are all aspects of the Tudor style that interior decorators embrace today. The style illustrates the tastes of medieval royalty and their ornate living quarters in manor houses and castles all over England. You can create a Tudor-style bedroom with a faux Tudor bed that represents the opulence of the era.

Instructions

    • 1

Add unfnished decorative wood embellishments, such as flowers or fleurs-de-lis, to a plain wooden headboard to imitate the hand-carved wood furniture of the Tudor period. Choose decorative wood embellishments that fit the era, such as flower garlands or fleurs-de-lis. Affix the wood embellishments to the headboard with wood glue or small nails.

    • 2

Stain the wooden headboard so that the end result is a dark, rich natural wood color. Choose a mahogany or cherry color for the most authentic look. If the headboard is already a light natural wood color but you want it darker, apply a dark stain to enhance the wood grain.

Mimic the Tudor-style canopy beds by mounting a bed crown to the wall that will hold a canopy. The bed crown is a decorative wood or resin ornament that holds fabric above the bed. Use a stud finder to locate the strongest place to hang the mounting bracket — high above the headboard, almost to the ceiling. Mark the spot with a pencil. Use a screwdriver to affix the mounting bracket to the wall. Find the bed crown mounting bracket and line it up with the wall mounting bracket. Gently slide the bed crown into place. You may need to apply some pressure to get the two pieces to lock. Bed crown kits may vary with the number of mounting brackets included; always follow the manufacturer's instructions for installation.

Drape a long piece of fabric across the bed crown and arrange the material to hang down either side of the headboard. Tie the material back with cording or let it puddle on the floor for added elegance. Use rich-looking fabrics such as faux velvet, faux silk or faux satin. If the wooden bed has a footboard, twine some fabric around the footboard posts to mimic a Tudor canopy bed.

Choose bedding in jewel tone colors, such as emerald, ruby, sapphire and topaz. Seek out bedspread patterns that have a tapestry or embroidery look to them for the most authentic Tudor decor. Find fabrics with some metallic gold thread for extra elegance.

    • 6

Add Tudor-style details to the fabrics on the bed in the form of gold braiding, tiny crystal beaded edging and even faux fur lining for pillows, linens and canopy material. Metallic thread tassels, piping, fringing and embroidered edging can turn almost any bedding into something that will work in a Tudor-style bedroom. Decorative pillows including bolster pillows with tapestry or embroidery can also enhance the faux Tudor look.

Accent the space around the bed with traditional Tudor-style decorations. Try crystal lamps, candles, stained glass, a coat of arms and gold-finished pieces on the walls and side tables of the faux Tudor bed to compete the decorating scheme for the bedroom.
