Room Themes for Teenage Girls Using Red as a Color

A teenage girl's bedroom is often her only haven from the world. It's where she laughs with friends, cries over a broken heart, reads her favorite novels and does her homework. Her room should reflect her personality. A creative, passionate girl will likely desire a red room. When decorating for young people, a good rule of thumb is to make it special, but avoid overly specific themes: She may be into penguins now, but at this time next month, it'll likely be pandas. General themes, such as "nature" or "French cafe" will be relevant much longer than her current favorite animal.
  1. Funky Theme

    • A funky theme will feature unique artifacts. The best place to find one-of-a-kind objects is your local thrift store. Keep an open mind as you look at lamps, frames, wall hangings, boxes, vases and knickknacks: With a couple of cans of spray paint, you can transform many items from gaudy to glorious. Cover lamp shades with funky fabric, such as red faux fur or a zebra print. Sew simple pillow covers using a few different fabrics and wild embellishments such as enormous buttons, exaggerated fringes and oversized appliques. Cover a whole wall in mismatched, spray-painted frames containing special photographs. Use embroidery thread to sew loops into the tops of her prized stuffed animals, and hang them from hooks over her bed.

    Rock 'n' Roll Theme

    • If your young lady is a rocker, paint the walls red and incorporate a lot of black and white. Visit your local record store for promo pictures of her favorite bands, purchase a quantity of black frames or spray-paint existing frames with black enamel, and group the photos on one wall. Sew pillow covers in black and white, print ink drawings of musical instruments onto iron-on transfer paper, and iron onto the pillows. Build a low stage with a frame made from 2-by-4s and cover with a 4-by-8-foot sheet of plywood. Paint the stage black and secure red curtains to the wall behind. Place track lighting on the ceiling in front of the stage, and put her guitar on a stand in back.

    Literary Theme

    • A voracious reader will feel right at home in a room-turned-library. Paint the walls red and install a wall of floor-to-ceiling dark-wood shelves to hold her books and knickknacks. A comfortable arm chair covered in lush chocolate fabric next to a side table containing a reading lamp will provide a comfortable place to read. Sew large floor pillow covers in various dark-toned fabrics and pile them up for yet another comfy reading area, or toss them on her bed for propping up with a good book. Hang a couple of large posters of her favorite authors, or scan the covers of some of her favorite books and frame them in ornate, mismatched frames.

    Love Theme

    • A love theme doesn't have to be cutesy. Red is the color of passion and creativity; romantic touches in the room will provide a passionate, creative environment. Adhere pre-cut vinyl adornments, such as fleur-de-lis and expansive swirls, to her walls. Sew pillow covers from Victorian floral fabrics. Install a lace bedskirt and place a vintage-style candlewick bedspread on her bed. Outfit a vanity with a collection of antique perfume bottles and place hooks nearby for her purse and scarf collections. Install airy, semi-transparent curtains in red or white to diffuse the light, and cover several lampshades in light pink fabric and fringe for soft, romantic lighting.
