Louis XVI Decorating

Louis XVI ascended to the French throne in 1754. Together with his queen, Marie Antoinette, he ushered in a new age of design and décor that remains popular today. Although it would be nearly impossible and prohibitively expensive to replicate the exact décor of a wealthy period home, it is relatively simple and inexpensive to add a Louis XVI touch to any home.
  1. Wall Covering

    • Pastel walls elegantly trimmed in expensive woods and elaborate wallpaper were a signature of the era. Replicate the look with pastel paint, crown molding and wainscoting in real or faux wood. Choose intricately carved patterns and dark wood whenever possible. Add a wallpaper border with a highly detailed design. Pictures of children and animals were especially common in period wallpaper.

    Furniture Styles

    • The signature Louis XVI style incorporates the classical look of ancient Greece and Rome. Choose furniture with rounded backs, clean lines and straight legs. Upholstered pieces with slightly oversized cushions were particularly favored. Re-create the look with damask, satin or velvet in pastel colors, white or tapestry. Desks and tables were generally made of carved dark wood.

    Furniture Painting

    • Gilded furniture was an important part of the original Louis XVI era. Replicate the look with bold acrylics or lacquer. Gold, silver or bronze spray paint recreates the look inexpensively, but can be messy. Remove the cushions and spray paint outdoors. Allow the piece to dry thoroughly before replacing the cushions or moving the item inside.

    Decorative Touches

    • Louis XVI décor includes a variety of decorative items. Bronze and marble clocks, porcelain figurines and small statuary incorporate allegorical figures and scenes from classical mythology. Geometric shapes, floral patterns and highly elaborate paint schemes are also used. Painted plates feature nature scenes, children, cupids or mythological creatures. Look for inexpensive replica items or simply add pieces that you find aesthetically pleasing.
