Instructions

  1. Bed Crown Canopy

    • 1

Use a bed crown canopy kit, and choose the right one. Ensure that you have enough space for a bed crown, which is a piece of wood or resin shaped in a half circle that affixes to the wall and holds fabric above a headboard. Look for a pattern and color that fits the gypsy motif, such as faux gold leaf or one adorned with crystals.

    • 2

Find the wall studs using the stud finder. Place a small pencil mark on the wall where the studs are located. Put the marks as high as you can above the headboard, just below the ceiling, for the most dramatic look. Ensure that the bed crown will have a few inches between its highest point and the ceiling.

    • 3

Hold the wall mount bracket from the kit up to the wall. Align the bracket hole or holes with the wall studs. Move the wall mount bracket gently around until you see the pencil marks appear in the screw holes.

    • 4

Screw the wall mount bracket into place using a screwdriver and the screws that came with the kit. Sometimes these screws are drywall screws and can be used as is. Other bed crown kits may come with a wall ancor and screws. If this is the case, drill the wall anchors in at the marked areas. Align the wall mount bracket with the anchor holes, and screw in the wall screws.

    • 5

Affix the bed crown piece by matching the hardware on the back to the wall mount bracket. Slide or press the pieces together until it is fastened to the wall.

    • 6

Thread fabric through the bar holder of the bed crown so that each side of the headboard has fabric flowing down it. Separate the fabric ends with crystal beaded tie backs, or let the fabric flow loose to puddle elegantly on the floor. Twist two different fabric panels through the bed crown to add color and contrast to the canopy.

    Ceiling Hung Canopy

Cut pieces of ribbon the same length as the curtain panel. Handstitch one end of the ribbon to the top edge of one panel. Stitch or hot-glue an embellishment over that, such as a sewing jewel, silk flower or sparkling button. Hand-stitch another ribbon about 5 inches apart from the first and embellish it as well. Continue until you have ribbons streaming down both curtain panels.

    • 8

Unscrew the outside ring of a wooden embroidery hoop and thread the curtain panels on, ensuring that the ribbons are on the outside of the canopy. Screw the hoop together after the curtains are threaded on. You don't need the inner hoop.

    • 9

Identify the two gaps where the curtains meet and the embroidery hoop is exposed. Set the hoop in front of you so the gaps are at the top and bottom. Snip through the curtain fabric on the left and right, just enough to expose the hoop. When you finish, the embroidery hoop should be just visible at the top, right, bottom and left.

    • 10

Tie ribbon, gold cording, rope or other sturdy material to each part of the exposed hoop. Cut the pieces so they are anywhere from 20 inches to 25 inches long, depending on how low you want the canopy to hang. Set the canopy aside.

    • 11

Identify the ceiling joist directly over the headboard using a stud finder. Mark the best location for the hanging canopy with a pencil. Screw in a ceiling hook so the hook base is flush with the ceiling.

    • 12

Gather the ends of the ribbon on the top of the canopy and tie them to the 3-inch ring. Adjust the ribbons so the canopy hoop hangs level. Loop the ring over the ceiling hook and drape the fabric around the headboard. Arrange the ribbons so they stream down over the fabric.
