Cutting-Edge Granite Designs

Granite is mostly used in kitchens and bathrooms for a hard, heat-resistant top that is easily cleaned and almost maintenance free. New ideas for granite tops are at a premium, as new homes are being built in styles that differs from the 1990s' minimalist approaches. Increasingly powerful and “busy” granite patterns are being used. As of 2011 and for the foreseeable future, more “cutting edge” decorative ideas will be the norm. Minimalism, for the moment, is gone.
  1. Terrazzo

    • Although still not common, one of the most interesting and avant garde concepts for kitchen granites is a terrazzo design on the floor. A terrazzo floor is mostly made of granite mixed in with some quartz and glass, poured into a skeletal scaffolding made of wood. The colors are endless, and, if you have the money, intricate patterns and designs can be included in the preparation and pouring process, even with counter tops.

    Islands

    • "Islands” can be a bit pricey, but they offer an alternative approach to granite utility counters. An “island” is simply a free-standing counter in the middle of a kitchen. They sometimes have stove tops and running water. More recently, the “multi-layered” island has become more common -- an island with a granite top that has several built-in shelves, sometimes cascading down onto a main work level. It's a striking design that is also very convenient for more complex and messy preparations.

    Colors

    • The 1990s were dominated by plain white or eggshell colors. Walls and counter tops both were very muted. The great thing about granite is that it can be prepared in any array of colors or designs you want. Generally, granite is available in different basic shades, but a “terrazzo” process is necessary for any real design. Kitchens are slowly returning to the older idea of wood-based color schemes. Olive, sage or deep greens might work, but more common is a deep maroon and even rust color, which creates a rustic, intimate design. A low ceiling might be the final complement to such a design.

    Stone

    • "Natural stone” provides an old-world look, reminiscent of medieval designs. In some recent design concepts old medieval-style gray stone is being used to create a continental look for a home or kitchen. Granite can be used both for floors and walls while the tops themselves are made of pressure-treated wood. This wood needs to be treated to avoid moisture absorption. The granite can be used to create a castle-style feel consisting of grayish hues.
