How to Design a Romantic Styled Room

The romantic style in interior decorating terms is a feminine look that often combines modern items with some vintage or vintage-style pieces. It tends to be a light and airy style, but you can combine it with some more masculine or earthy accessories or furnishings, if desired. To design a romantic styled room, you will need to bring all the features of the look together; the specifics will vary, depending on which room you're decorating.

Things You'll Need

  • Paint in white or pale pastels
  • Pale or floral throws, pillows, linen or soft furnishings
  • Painted wood furniture, such as chests or end tables

Instructions

    • 1

Paint the walls of your room in a pale or pastel color such as white, cream, pale dusky pink or very light blue.

    • 2

Cover your soft furnishings with romantic style throws, blankets or linen. Depending on which room in your home you're decorating, you might need bed linen, throws or blankets to cover a sofa or armchair -- unless you can buy one already upholstered in an appropriate fabric -- pillow covers or curtains. Choose pale fabrics, preferably printed with soft florals or gingham.

    • 3

Buy some wood furniture, painted in pale colors, preferably in shades of white or cream. Alternatively, you could paint some of your existing furniture yourself. Furniture with soft curves works best for the romantic style, as it's more feminine in appearance.

Accessorize the room with plenty of vintage or vintage-look pieces. Some examples are vases, lamps, photos framed in vintage-style frames, jewelery boxes or other small boxes, candleholders and jugs. Try to stick with pale or pastel colors, floral prints, gingham or even pale polka dot items. Anything that's been decoupaged works well, too.
