How to Tile with Cuenca Ceramics

Tiles made in the cuenca style feature colorful, all-over patterns and raised design outlines that create areas of deep color. The word "cuenca" means basin and describes the process for making the ceramic tiles. Cuenca tiles are highly decorative and are suitable for use indoors or out. Their patterning can serve as highlight details or as a striking design feature when they are used together over a large area.

Instructions

  1. Tiling

    • 1

Mark the area on the wall where you will lay the cuenca ceramic tiles. If you’re tiling a whole wall, mark a straight line horizontally along the middle of the wall to indicate the position of the first line of tiles.

    • 2

Spread tile adhesive on the wall using the tile adhesive comb. Apply the adhesive up to the marker you made on the wall, but don’t cover the marker. Hold the tool at a 45 degree angle to evenly distribute the adhesive over the wall. Press the tiles into the adhesive, twisting them slightly if necessary to get them into place.

    • 3

Match up the patterns on the cuenca tiles as you affix subsequent tiles into place. The ornamental and regular effect of the patterning needs careful placement to look neat and uniform. Insert tile spacers between the tiles to keep the grout gaps even.

    Grouting

    • 4

Mix the grout according to the manufacturers instructions.

    • 5

Press the grout between the tiles using either a grout float or your fingertips. Grout will wipe cleanly off glazed cuenca tiles, so don’t worry about grout covering the tile surface.

    • 6

Wipe excess grout off the tile surface with the damp cloth. Rinse and wring the cloth regularly to keep it clean as you wipe.

    • 7

Allow the grout to dry for 24 hours then wipe over it again with a soft, dry cloth.
