DIY Recessed Bookshelves Between Studs

Recessed bookshelves are one alternative for the homeowner that needs shelving space, but does not want to have a bulky bookcase taking up floor space in the living room or den area. These recessed shelves are commonly made out of plywood and can be built in an afternoon. Trim pieces of molding should be installed around the recessed shelf once installation is complete. It will take approximately three to four hours to install a recessed bookcase.

Instructions

    • 1

Pick an area on the wall where the recessed bookshelf will be placed. Use a stud finder to locate the wall stud on the left and right hand side. The stud finder emits alight when it senses metal from nails inside the stud. The bookcase will be installed between the two studs.

    • 2

Sketch a light outline of where the studs are located with a pencil.

    • 3

Determine the depth, height and width you want the bookcase to be. The width of the bookcase will be the distance between the wall studs. The depth and height of the bookcase are discretionary and up to the builder. Measure these dimensions with a tape measure and write them down.

    • 4

Use a drywall saw to begin cutting out the drywall, between the studs, where the recessed bookshelf will be placed.

    • 5

Have the plywood pieces cut to size when purchasing them at a home improvement store.

    • 6

Assemble the book case using wood glue and finishing nails. Connect the top and bottom pieces to the side pieces first. Once the frame is assembled, nail the back onto the back of the frame. Install the decorative molding around the front perimeter of the bookshelf with the hammer and nails.

    • 7

Slide the bookshelf into the hole in the wall. Secure the shelving in place by hammering the sides through the two by four studs on each side.

    • 8

Use a router to make the slots where the shelves will fit. Use a level to make sure the mounting slots are cut evenly. The the slots should only be cut approximately a quarter inch deep.

    • 9

Slide the bookcase shelves into place.

    • 10

Sand and paint the bookcase to taste.
