Select curtains made of heavy velour in the appropriate color. Solid black or solid red are common colors for stage curtains.
Hang a thick, sturdy, golden curtain rod just above the space or object to be framed by the stage curtains. The curtain rod should be a double rod, with space for a valance and panels. If you purchase an expandable curtain rod, purchase one that is already close in size to the dimensions of the space where it will hang when in its most compact form. This will prevent the curtain rod from sagging from the weight of the heavy curtains.
Hang the curtains from the inside rod and arrange them so they are gathered at the top in attractive folds. Bunch up the curtains at each end of the rod, rather than stretching to meet in the middle.
Hang the valance on the exterior rod. The valance should be large enough to stretch from one side of the rod, with room to spare.
Use a golden rope-style tieback to pull the curtains away from the scene behind them. The tiebacks should hold back the panels just below the middle.
