How to Decorate a Large Wall With a Small Electric Fireplace

A small electric fireplace can give your room a cozy, inviting atmosphere on winter nights -- but if a fireplace is too small for the scale of your room, it can create a decorating dilemma. Don't leave that expanse of wall mostly blank or your room will look unfinished. The right architectural details and accessories can fool the eye into thinking your fireplace is larger than it actually is and bring your room back into balance.

Instructions

    • 1

Paint the wall the desired color.

    • 2

Paint a patch around your fireplace that is 6 inches to 12 inches wider and taller than your electric fireplace. Use a dark color, such as black or charcoal gray. If your fireplace is set in a wood-faced casing, paint the wall a color that matches the wood. This will visually expand the height and width of your fireplace so it looks more in proportion to the size and height of your wall.

    • 3

Center the electric fireplace in the patch and it will blend into the color making it appear larger.

    • 4

Add decorative molding around the edges of the colored patch to give your fireplace more prominence.

    • 5

Hang a mantle or prominent shelf above the fireplace. Paint it the same color as your molding.

    • 6

Hang a piece of artwork, wall sculpture or mirror above the fireplace that is about the width and height of the painted patch. Go too big and the hanging piece will just overpower the fireplace and dwarf it further; too small will not draw the eye upward successfully.

    • 7

Decorate the mantle or shelf. Place a small grouping of items on each end, such as vases and candleholders. Add a couple of picture frames on it. Your groupings should be balanced, about the same size and visual weight, but not too symmetrical, which detracts from their impact.
